May Challenge Intro | Chunkie Mini Album | Photo Tutorial

Happy first day of May and it’s time for a new challenge.  Ingrid here once again.

Our challenge for this month is all about Handmade Flowers. This is a fun challenge! So, crafters out there, ready-set-go and happy creating handmade flowers. Scroll down to the last part of this post for this month’s challenge guidelines.

Today I won’t be sharing my project life pages but I’ll be sharing my chunkie mini album from our quick vacation to the Philippines. This is a chunkie 4×6 album full of photos, less papers and embellishment, and some journaling.

Here’s my DT kit for this month:

I also used some embellishment from my past DT kits:

And gathered some of our travel ephemera and postcards that I intended to use (although I wasn’t able to use all of it).

Cut the cardstocks to 4×6 sizes.

Printed our vacation photos. Close to 100 photos. Most of the photos I made into collage, some single photos and others full spreads.

For this mini album, I started with the covers. I cut 2 4×6 chipboards, covered them using the Jollibee paper bag, covered the insides with patterned cardstock, and punched 2 holes on the side. Then added a title “Travelogue” on the front cover. Decided to use the Jollibee paper bag for the covers since it’s our quick vacation to Philippines where Jollibee originated.

Here are my foundation pages in chronological order without the photos and embellishment yet. I usually do this step first before I add the photos. I arrange my cardstocks and at the same time inserting scratch papers with numbers according to the order of my photos. Once I finalize the arangement of the photos, the cardstocks, the ephemera, and the postcards, I add the covers and it’s ready for embellishing.

Here’s my first page. I used a tag as my opening page with a hand drawn postcard I bought a few months ago.

One of the ephemera I always keep/gather during our travels were the boarding pass tickets. Glassine paper bags are nice way to use for these boarding passes. I also added a collage of photos as our starting point for our trip, Dubai Airport.

For this mini album, I added some postcards I bought at the airport where we had our connecting flight and from our destination (2 Singapore postcards & 1 Davao). These postcards will serve as a divider for the photos. As for this page, it’s from Singapore. It was just a couple of hours layover and not much to document. Just took a few shot at the Changi Airport while looking for our boarding gate for our connecting flight to Davao, Philippines. I also added another Singapore postcard towards the last part of the mini album since we had a 20-hour layover there before our connecting flight back to Dubai.

This is the first highlight of our quick vacation, my eldest son’s elementary graduation. I added his name “Markus” using the chipboard alpha from my kit. I also punched some tabs using scrap cardstocks and stapled them on those special moments/highlights as well as to the postcards. I love using these tabs on my minis. I don’t think I have any scrapbook albums without adding tabs.

Throughout my mini album I also added some photos, stamped the dates and wrote some journaling just to note what the photo was about. If you can add more/longer journaling that would be better. I embellished the cardstock here with the cute metal brad from my DT kit. I also did the same to other cardstock throughout my mini album.

This is also another hightlght of our vacation, our little fishing adventure. Added a little tag with the “love you” from my past DT kit. That cardboard on the left was a backing board from the sticker (I forgot which one) and thought I could find it useful someday so I kept it. Now I used it for this mini album. I just added a strip of washi tape on both sides on the edge part. I intend to write something on that number 3 (number 3 representing my boys), something personal but I’m lost with words at the moment. So I left it that way for now.

Some of the ephemera that I had gathered during our vacation I directly inserted between the pages just like the green felt doily below (it was part of the package my bestfriend sent me).

Here, I used the sentiment stickers from my past DT kit. These becomes my bullet journaling of the moments I wanted to remember.

Another highlight, our swimming adventure. I added foam thickers from my past DT kit again, “here we go”. I also incorporated the plastic sheet with the veneer tag on both sides with a postcard “best day ever” from my postcard collection.

At the back of the postcard I added  a little bit long journaling about our swimming day. On the right page I adhered the loosed tiles (more ephemera) I got from the swimming pool on a plastic sheet using a mounting tape.

And this is one of my favorite photo during our vacation. Even if we were against the light I still love this photo. There are photos worth the full spread layout. The photo as a full spread itself will just do even without the sentiment sticker but I added it anyways. Once in a while add some photo spreads on your albums to highlight those very special moments either in full color or black-&-white.

Always remember that there’s no right or wrong way to do a mini album. It’s all up to you. And there are a lot of workshops, online classes and inspiration around to help you through.

Pardon my lonnggg post and I hope I got you inspired for your next mini album. Thank you for reading this until the end.
