Mixed Media Canvas | Guest Designer March 2016

Where did the first two months of 2016 go? Is it March already?! We cannot believe it is time to introduce our third Guest Designer of the month, time surely flies!

This month we wanted something Mixed Media’ish and invited our long time patron and ardent supporter Sathya Kala Sankaran to play with some goodies in our store. What she came up with is absolutely stunning and we are grateful for all the detailed photos and step by step guide.

I have been creative from my childhood and this drove me here to this blog land and crafting world.  Was looking around for an opportunity to satiate my artistic and creative appetite and that was the time, stumbled upon an art called Quilling and from that, there is no looking back. I started blogging from September 2011 for the sheer love of paper and the way it transforms with the flow of mind and soul.

Mixed media and Watercolor are my current crush and I have recently started using and love working with digital stamp designs too.

I would love to thank Neelu of Pretty Paper Studio, for giving me this lovely opportunity to showcase my talent. Many Thanks to Bipasha, Design Team member here at PPS, for giving me wings and making me to love and explore myself well in this art form.

Now onto the project:

I was provided with awesome Mixed media goodies in my DT kit and I have come with a little tutorial for a Mini 6”x6” Mixed media canvas. It’s a picture heavy post, so sit back, relax and enjoy while I take you through the process.

Always I love to play around a quote or a phrase for my MM works. And this time, its “Follow your dreams”…Yes…Follow your heart, it shows you the way to achieve your dreams. My project is just wound around that idea.

Initially primed the mini canvas with Dina Wakley Black gesso. Did stenciling using Prima Modelling paste with Prima Grunge grid stencil on both corners of the canvas. After Drying, randomly applied Prima Texture clear crackle on the stencilied areas. And let it to air dry or hit heat gun for the crackles to appear.

Took a piece of beige lace stuck to the canvas diagonally with a popsicle stick (shaped as in pic, colored with Heidi Swapp Black velvet mist).

Treated the canvas now with various Lindy’s Gang sprays in the shades of blue, green, coral, gold and heat set at regular intervals for the color to set. Then finally, sprayed with Heidi Swapp Black velvet mist which beautifully revealed the cracks on the stenciled areas.

Took a piece of cheesecloth stuck using Dinawakley Matte gel medium and randomly added Prima Mini Art stones as shown in pic and set to dry.

Diecut 2 hearts, one from a chipboard and another from a pp. Glue together and using TCW tile stencil from kit, applied Prima Modelling paste and set aside to dry.

Tied the heart diecut with natural hemp with the metal heart embellishments provided in my kit and applied generously with Prima art alchemy – Metallic Steampunk Copper. Sponged the diecut corners with Ranger’s Black Archival ink for the heart to pop. For the base of the heart, Collaged few Ephemera diecuts provided in my kit and made base for the heart.

Matted this onto the cheesecloth with few Prima flowers from kit and my stash. Added Prima Junkyard findings – metal zipper – Explore, TimHoltz word band with Natural Hemp, which is dyed with Prima Art alchemy Acrylic paint– Opal magic- Rose gold from my stash. Same paint was applied on the mini artstones, and even on either sides of the lace.

Meanwhile, butterflies are made ready using various stampsets. Stamped using Black Archival ink, colored with Faber Castell Metallic gelatos (blue, coral, teal green, gold) and heat embossed using UTEE clear for the sheen and shine.

Two large butterflies were stuck together at middle and a small bottle, from the kit, was filled with Stampendous Ice shaving fragments and wrapped with Ephemera diecut and tied with Prima Opal rose gold dyed natural hemp. Butterflies are stuck using Glue gun as shown in pic. Computer generated sentiment is sponged using DI – Tumbled glass and Ranger’s black archival ink and popped using foam adhesives.

Few Stampendous Ice shavings are added using Matte gel for all those sparkly final touches of the project.
