Watercolor Greeting Card – Photo Tutorial

Hello there! This is Mable from Flourished Expressions back here with another project for February! Our theme for February is this brilliant color palette from ColorPalettes.net. This palette has the 2018 Pantone Color of the year – UltraViolet – it is also my favorite color.

Color Palette 2078

My DT kit for this month included many products I had never used before, so for this month’s project, I’m going to attempt something outside my comfort zone, which is watercolor. I made a watercolor greeting card and envelope incorporating the beautiful colors in this month’s theme.

Supplies used:

• Prima Watercolor Card Kit

Crayola Markers

•Paint Brush

• Deco Art Roy Purple-Americana Paint 2 Oz

• Metallic Gelly Roll Pen – Gold

Pigma Professional Brush Pen – Fine

Process

Step 1- Paint the front panel

To start, I used the card with the tulips design from the Prima Watercolor Card kit to form the base of my Watercolor greeting card. This kit is so helpful for watercolor beginners like me because I don’t have to worry about making the flower shapes – I just had to color the pretty outlined design; such a timesaver. Rather than using my watercolors, I decided to use the Crayola Markers to color in the design.

I smeared the marker on a clear plastic folder which became my palette. The Crayola marker set comes with 10 colors and included only one green shade, so I used the yellow and brown markers to blend with the green to give each leaf a different shade.

Next came the tulip bulbs – I used the pink and purple markers for the bulbs. I varied the saturation of water on my brush to add the shading. Lastly, I used a watered down blue to fill in the background. Then I let this panel dry.

Step 2 – Add the sentiment

While I love the tulip image on the front, I felt it was incomplete, so I drew a fine gold border around the front panel with a metallic Gold Gelly roll pen. The next step was to add the sentiment – I wasn’t sure if a brush pen might smudge over the watercolor background – so I used the sentiment panels included in the Prima Card kit. To add some dimension, I made a banner shape out of some leftover gold foam board and stuck the sentiment from the kit on this banner. I stuck this banner in the empty space above the tulips. The inside of the card has a grey border which I colored with the pink and purple Crayola markers. To finish the card, I used the Fine Pigma Professional Brush Pen to letter in the sentiment inside the card.

Step 3 – Decorate the envelope

The next step was to decorate the envelope which is included in the Prima Watercolor Card Kit. First, I painted a border with the Deco Art Acrylic Purple Paint – to add the pattern, I varied the pressure on the paintbrush as I added color.  Lastly, I addressed the envelope to the recipient, in this case, “Mum & Dad”. I used the Crayola Markers to write recipients names. For the blending, I smeared the purple marker on the plastic folder and picked up the purple color with the pink marker to achieve the blended effect.  To avoid smudging the border on the envelope, I kept a blank piece of paper under my wrist as I wrote the words.  Then, I used the Gold Gelly Roll pen to add metallic shadow to the shades of the letters.
